The Future of Short-term Rentals in Del Mar

After 3 years of negotiations with homeowners, the Del Mar City Council has approved a compromise this week on short-term rentals.

The short-term rentals will be limited to no more than 28days a year for a minimum of 7 days at a time.

The lone vote against the compromise was Mayor Terry Sinnott who stated, “I’m willing to support regulation, but we’re going at it in a too harsh way.?

It is hard for anyone who does not live in the beach communities to really understand what these neighborhoods are experiencing. I have visions of college kids on spring break who are having loud parties long into the night. Difficulties finding parking in already crowded streets.

Then there is the other side of the coin.

I have rented many vacation homes on my travels, in fact, I don’t even look at hotels anymore. I recently traveled throughout Italy using Airbnb and VRBO. It is nice to have a “home? to come back to at the end of the day. Being able to cook my own meals is another way to cut down on the expense of traveling. I respect that this is someone’s “home? and treat it accordingly.

I assume that there are many families like me who would rather have a “home? than a hotel room or rooms for their entire family. It is much more convenient and a less expensive way to travel.

The approved restrictions still need to be approved by the Coastal Commission where at least one homeowner has said that “they are going to have a real fight on their hands.?

I think this battle is just beginning. See the entire article written by Philip Diehl for the San Diego Union-Tribune here.
