No one is average . . .
The other day I was listening to a Seth Godin podcast titled “I see you.” He told a story of the Air Force in the 1950s.
Apparently, it was not a good time to be a pilot. There were many lives and planes that were lost. I can only imagine how expensive that must have been. And many of them should have been preventable.
An outside consultant was hired and found that the seat in the cockpit had not been redesigned in over 30 years.
The solution: redefine the average pilot by using 17 key measurements. The rationalization was if they could define the average they could then redesign the seat and the entire cockpit and make the plane much safer.
But, once they found the average for all 17 measurements, they found that fewer than 3% of all pilots in the Air Force would safely fit in the seat.
As it turns out, very few people are average.
They went on to pioneer the “adjustable” seat. As you can imagine, manufacturers at the time were not happy because it cost much less to make one stationary seat, than one with moving parts. But the solution was to change the seat, the system to accommodate the pilot. Not the other way around.
The fact is, there is no such thing as “average.” Average is just an illusion.
Yet many businesses have built systems which insist that everyone is average. These were built for a reason, so that they don’t have to see you. They don’t have to make an exception for anyone that would make their job more difficult.
This is why when I am eating on the run I order my food just a little different. Hold the Mayo please, then they can’t just grab the burger sitting there. It must be made to order, fresh.
