Who says “it Never Rains in Southern California?” . . .

When I was a kid, growing up in Downers Grove, Illinois I remember singing along with the 1973 song of the same name by Albert Hammond. The next line in that song goes “but girl, don’t they warn ya? It pours, man, it pours.”

Never has that been more true than this year.

Last week, I met our Home Inspector at a home my client is in the process of purchasing in Lakeside. It was pouring down rain.

The home had been professionally landscaped somewhere along the lines and drains were installed throughout the property.

Still, we found water coming in from under the side door to the garage.

After further investigation by the home inspector, there were three issues.

  1. The gutters were filled with leaves and other debris so the water was not flowing to the downspouts properly.
  2. There was one downspout that was causing most of the issue because it was not directed away from the house properly.
  3. The drains that were installed probably worked fine but they were too small to accommodate the level of rains we have gotten this year.

Our climate is changing and at this point we don’t know if this is a rare year or if it could be an indication of what our new normal will be.

One thing is clear however, take note this year of where the water is going around your property. If you have water pooling or entering places it shouldn’t get a landscaper in to have it addressed sooner rather than later.

As much as we need the rain, I think we are all getting tired of it.

Maybe I should consider a new song . . .

“Raindrops keep falling on my head!”

Have a great week!
