“My new hero . . .”

I have had many heroes in my life. Most I have not met.

It started in the 3rd grade when I read every book in our school library about Abraham Lincoln. “Honest Abe” he was called because he fought for his clients when he was an attorney in my home state of Illinois.

My next hero was Benjamin Franklin. I had read his autobiography and admired his tenacity and self-discipline. Even after I read his recent biography written by Walter Isaacson, I discovered that what he wrote about himself may have been slightly exaggerated, there could be no doubt that there was much to be admired.

But today, I have a new hero, Jeff Bezos.

In case you haven’t heard, Mr. Bezos today published what appears to be attempts to blackmail him by the National Enquirer. There are emails threatening the publication of nude pictures and texts that were sent via private servers. These no doubt would have been embarrassing to him and to his family had they been published.

But he said no. Rather than be blackmailed he published it all himself. In a statement, he declared “Of course I don’t want personal photos published, but I also won’t participate in their well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks, and corruption. I prefer to stand up, roll this log over, and see what crawls out.”

As I read the news this morning I thought “Thank you, Mr. Bezos.” The world needs more people who are willing to “roll this log over and see what crawls out.”

Last week, I published an article about a “confidential remark” that was put in the MLS to influence buyers’ agents to show and write offers on a property. If you missed it, here is a link. (https://oneworld-realty.com/our_story/is-it-legal/)

Like the National Enquirer, the real estate business has our share of unethical agents that don’t see any harm in bribing agents. Even at the expense of their own clients.

I took some flack over it, but like Mr. Bezos I just rolled over the log to see what and who would crawl out. It was rather amazing.

Every industry can use a hero.

Not all heroes wear capes.
